Finish a download after its link expired
Updated 5 November 2026
Links to big files on many sites stop working after a few hours. Most download managers then make you start from zero. VM Player can carry on with a fresh link, and it checks that the new link really is the same file first.
Why links expire
File hosts and video sites often give out download links that work only for a while, or only from the page that made them. When the time runs out, the server stops sending the file. VM Player then marks the download Link expired – get a new link and keeps every part it already has.
Steps
- Open the Downloads tab and tap the stopped download.
- Get a fresh link. Either open the page you downloaded from again and start the download there, or copy the file’s new address.
- If you copied a link, tap Paste link on the stopped download.
- VM Player compares the new link with the file it has. If the size and content match, you see “Same file – carrying on” and it continues from where it stopped.
If the new link points to a different file, VM Player says so (“That link is a different file. Nothing was changed.”) and your partly downloaded file stays as it was.
Other reasons a download stops
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Waiting for network | Nothing. With Auto-retry on (Download settings), VM Player carries on when the connection comes back. |
| Waiting for Wi-Fi | Download on Wi-Fi only is on. Connect to Wi-Fi, or turn it off in Download settings. |
| Server can’t resume | This server cannot send a file from the middle. If the download stops, it has to start again. |
| Not enough space | Free some space; the download carries on from where it stopped. |
| Too big for this memory card | The card uses FAT32, which cannot hold files over 4 GB. Save to the phone’s storage instead. |
| File changed on server | The site replaced the file. Download it again to get the new one. |
How you know the file is complete
VM Player downloads a file in small parts and checks each one. When the file is complete, it checks it again and marks it Verified. If a file you downloaded earlier will not play, open it in the Downloads tab and tap Check & repair: VM Player re-checks every part and fetches only the damaged ones again.
