Change the audio language of a video
Updated 5 November 2026
Many films come with more than one soundtrack in the same file: Hindi and English, a director’s commentary, or 5.1 and stereo. Here is how to pick the one you want on an Android phone.
Audio track
English · E-AC3 5.1
Hindi · AC3 5.1
Commentary · AAC
What you need
- An Android phone, tablet or Android TV with Android 7.0 or newer.
- VM Player, free from Google Play.
- A video file with more than one audio track. MKV files often have several; MP4, WebM, TS and HLS streams can have them too.
Steps
- Open the video in VM Player. Tap it in the Videos list or the Files tab, or choose VM Player when another app asks how to open a video.
- Tap the screen once to show the controls.
- Tap Audio (the headphones at the top of the player). A list opens with every soundtrack in the file, with its language and its format, for example Hindi · AC3 5.1.
- Tap the track you want. The sound switches straight away, without starting the video again.
VM Player remembers the track you picked for that video, so the next time you open it, it plays in the same language.
AC3, E-AC3 and DTS sound
Many phones cannot decode Dolby (AC3, E-AC3) or DTS sound on their own, so other players show the picture with no sound. VM Player decodes these formats inside the app, so they play on any phone, through the speaker, headphones or Bluetooth.
Using a separate audio file
If the soundtrack you want is a separate file (for example film.hindi.aac), open the Audio list and choose to add a track from your phone. VM Player plays it in time with the picture.
If something does not work
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| “Alternate audio tracks are not available.” | The file has only one soundtrack. Another language would have to come from a different file. |
| The list shows tracks with no language name | Whoever made the file did not label them. Try each one; they are listed in the order they are stored. |
| Picture but no sound on a rare format | When VM Player says “Not supported here. Tap to play with the compatibility engine”, tap it. The compatibility engine plays every format; it is a one-time download from Google Play. |
